NEW YORK – Joe Ryan, one of two Tampa Bay Rays young arms selected for the rotation of the United States Olympic baseball team, has noted the differences between the players and the athletes who will compete in the other disciplines at the Olympic Games from Tokyo.
“When we get on the plane I’m sure I will be very excited. But even then, I have a season ahead of me, I still have things to do here, “Ryan said when the names of the squad members were released on Friday.
“We talk about how different it is from any other Olympic sport, the other people who go and who have worked four years for this. We’re like, ‘ok,’ when we’re done, I’ll have to reopen five days later or something like that. “
Ryan, a 25-year-old right-hander from Triple-A, and 22-year-old right-hander from Double-A Shane Baz, were added to manager Mike Scioscia’s 24-man roster. They will be joined in the rotation by Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson and former Texas right-hander Nick Martinez, who is now with Fukuoka in Japan.
Baz will also participate in the Future All-Star Game on July 11 at Coors Field in Denver.
“Obviously you want to play in the Major Leagues, but winning the gold medal for your country is a tough thing to beat,” Baz said.
Major League Baseball does not allow players from the 40 Major League roster to participate in the Games.
