Twins REJECT option on closer Alex Colomé

By Dency Milan

Minnesota Twins closer Alex Colomé ended up on the free agent list when his team announced that he will not exercise the option to keep his services on the team of Major League Baseball-MLB.

The Twins have turned down a $ 5.5 million mutual option on veteran right-hander Alex Colomé, Dan Hayes of The Athletics tweets. Instead, you will be paid a purchase of $ 1.25 million, and you will return to the open market in search of a new opportunity.

Alex ColoméThe 32-year-old came to the Minnesota Twins in the 2021 offseason from the Chicago White Sox, where he served as a closer for the Whiteleg team for two seasons (2019 and 2020).

Being a rival of his last team, he left a 6-5 line, 2.27 ERA, with 83 appearances, with 42 saves in 46 opportunities. This season got off to a lousy start, which he later adjusted, but his performance declined at the end of the season. In the end he left the line with the 65-inning Twins with a 4.15 ERA with a strikeout rate of 20%, a walk rate of 7.9% and a 53.7% shot.

The magic at South Siders was that only the opponents averaged him anemic .211, with the twins .305. The Twins probably didn’t want a replica of their best seasons with the White Sox, but being around for them would have been just the thing. The fact that Colomé settled for a one-year contract, after his numbers, including the leader in saves in 2019 in the American League, spoke clearly that he no longer had confidence, and in the end the White Sox made him the Twins play right under his nose.

Colomé will be looking for a proposal in the winter market, but after his season, I don’t think he will receive a great contract, fulfilling his 33rd birthday on the last day of 2021. Ultimately it will be a one-year proposal as he signed with the Minnesota Twins, which he may have apparently.

With men like Raisel Iglesias he’s on his own level as the number one reliever in free agency, with right-hander Kendall Graveman perhaps leading the second tier of options. Colomé won’t find a multi-year deal this winter.

As for the Twins, they will be looking for additional weapons in both the rotation and the bullpen. Closer Taylor Rogers saw the end of his season in July due to a ligament strain in his pitching hand, but if his health outlook is clear, then he should come back to keep strong in the later innings again. Veteran Tyler Duffey, 26-year-old flamethrower Jorge Alcalá and gray-bearded southpaw Caleb Thielbar should also have roles in that late-entry mix next year, but the Twins plan to bring at least one arm, if not multiple arms, to reinforce that group.
