Trout won’t be back before the All-Star Game

NEW YORK – Mike Trout was placed on the Los Angeles Angels’ 60-day disabled list Monday, ruling out his return before the All-Star break.

Trout hit the bat for the first time since he strained his right calf on May 17.

“He’s progressing pretty well,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said before Game 1 of the series against the New York Yankees. “He’s on pace. He’s close to the target.”

Trout’s injury is 50% recovered, Maddon said. Trout will be on rehab assignment in the minor leagues, possibly after the All-Star break. He is eligible to return on July 17, when the Angelenos host Seattle for their second game after the break.

An eight-time All-Star and three-time AL MVP, Trout had a .333 batting average, with eight home runs and 18 RBIs before injuring himself when roaming the bases against Cleveland.

The gardener follows the long recovery program and is expected to be back in six to eight weeks.

Los Angeles sent infielder Kean Wong to Triple-A Salt Lake after Sunday’s 6-4 win at Tampa Bay and selected the contract of Salt Lake outfielder Scott Schebler on Monday.

The 30-year-old Schebler has a .281 batting average with 8 homers and 31 RBIs in 40 Triple-A games. A seven-year MLB veteran, he hit .148 (4 of 27) in 11 games with Los Angeles between April 19 and May 3.

Outfielder Justin Upton, who hasn’t played since June 22 due to low back strain, is on the mend.

“I think he’ll be fine. When he’s ready to go back, he’ll be here,” Maddon said. “He still won’t be able to maneuver the batter’s cage like he normally does. But we think he’ll be fine in a couple of days.”
