Sources: Dominican Oliver Mármol will be the manager of Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals plan to name coach Oliver Marmol as their next manager, a source told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Athletic’s Katie Woo said a formal announcement would be made on Monday.

Marmol, 35, was drafted by the Cardinals in the 2007 college draft and became a coach four years later. Since 2017 he has been part of the Major League Baseball staff and for the last three seasons he was the bench coach of manager Mike Shildt.

Marmol, who is the son of Dominicans, was born in Orlando, Florida, and lived several years of his childhood in the Dominican Republic.

Despite a team-record 17-game winning streak that led St. Louis to a wild-card spot in the MLB, Shildt was fired as manager earlier this month.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak cited “philosophical differences” to explain Shildt’s firing. He declined to expand on those differences, saying the move was “something that came up recently.”

Mozeliak noted that Shildt was heading into the final year of her contract, but said that was not the only reason for parting ways. Shildt had signed a three-year extension after the 2019 season.

“All I can say is where we felt the team was going, we were struggling to be on the same page,” Mozeliak said. “With him having a year left on his contract, we could have gone into 2022 with that on him, and we just decided internally it would be better to part ways now and take a fresh look as we head into a new season.”

At the time of the firing, Mozeliak declined to discuss possible replacements, but said there were many internal candidates.

“As I said before, 2021 was a real success and something of which, for all of us who are part of the organization, we are very proud,” Mozeliak said at the time. “Every time you have a 17-game winning streak and you really create history for your organization, it’s something you take great pride in. Many times these decisions are not based solely on the season. More specifically, it is directional where we want to go.”

The Athletic first reported the Cardinals’ decision on Sunday.
