Shildt joins Padres as advisor

SAN DIEGO — Following the announcement that the Padres had completed their roster in the player development department, one name stood out.

Former Cardinals manager Mike Shildt joined the Friars as an advisor to the player development department. Shildt’s role, according to club sources, will be as an adviser to director Ryley Westman’s group in any way necessary.

Shildt was in charge of the San Luis team for four seasons. He posted a .559 win-loss percentage and led the team to the postseason the past three years. Shildt was fired by the Cardinals in October and was initially viewed as a candidate to fill the managerial vacancy, which was later filled by the hiring of Bob Melvin.

In December, Shildt had taken a position on the board of Major League Baseball, which was to help implement technology on the field and initiatives for youth. He’s still shaping up to serve in that role, while also helping San Diego’s player development group.

Shildt, 53, has an impressive track record in that department, having spent nearly two decades in the Cardinals organization as a minor league manager, coach and scout before moving up to the big-team roster in 2017. managers highlighted such experience as a valuable resource. The Friars intentionally didn’t set a role for Shildt, but it looks like he’ll be around to hear ideas from Westman’s roster.

Westman will begin his first full season at the helm of the player development department, with Mike Daly joining San Diego as an adviser to the department’s director after five seasons as the assistant general manager with the Rangers.
