Serious by coronavirus expelotero from Sancti Spíritus Yoanis Delgado Pedroso

The Cuban player Yoanis Delgado Pedroso, a former member of the Sancti Spíritus team, is in critical condition in an intensive care room, after catching the coronavirus.

Delgado Pedroso, 39, comes from the Gourriel Delgado family, recognized for their contribution to the development of baseball in Cuba.

Yoanis, son of the remembered baseball player José Raúl Delgado Díaz, is cousin of the legendary Lourdes gourriel and second cousin of his children Yulieski, Lourdes Jr. and Yuniesky Gourriel. The first two, after making careers in their homeland, jumped to the Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States.

Edmundo González, a former baseball coach and friend of the family, said that on Thursday afternoon, Delgado Pedroso was transferred to the intensive care unit of the Camilo Cienfuegos University General Hospital, in the city of Sancti Spíritus, and was diagnosed with post-COVID bacterial bronchopneumonia.

He specified that his health is reported as critical and he is coupled to artificial respiration equipment.

In a telephone conversation with the head doctor of the ward of that health institution, on the morning of this Friday, González learned that the patient’s vital parameters were stable, normal blood pressure, oxygen saturation ranged between 90-94, but presents a severe distress, which makes him report critical.

As the specialist explained to him, it was too early to determine the possible evolution of the player, because, at the time of the report, the first twelve hours had not yet elapsed since the beginning of the administration of the drugs to the patient.

González also spoke with José Raúl Delgado, who expressed his infinite gratitude to all the people who have expressed solidarity towards his son, highlighting the attitude of the distinguished Frederich Cepeda, who has practically not left her side since Yoanis entered the hospital.

He also highlighted the presence on Thursday at the hospital of players such as Roberto Ramos, Lázaro Martínez and Yunior Ibarra, among others, who have also supported the family with the contribution of food and offered to donate medicines in case of need.

Friends and followers of the former recipient of the Spiritus national teams to the National Series have asked for prayers for his speedy recovery.

“Today I ask for you, my brother (…). I am going to light a candle to my Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre. We have not seen each other for a long time, although from time to time we talk. Today I wish you a very speedy recovery, you are strong. On the 17th of Santi Spíritus he needs us to pray for him “, said on his Facebook wall Rogelio García Morejón, a worker at the School for School Sports Initiation (EIDE) in the province.

A worker from the local radio and television system asked for help on social networks to send the athlete Heparina Sódica or Fraxiparin, an anticoagulant drug that Delgado Pedroso needs for his treatment and that apparently is not available at the institution.

“Today I have come to ask for help for a friend (…) former Gallos player, loved by all, he is in the hospital in middle school and we need Heparin Sodium or Fraxiparin. Please, if you could help us,” requested Anai Fernández.

Other people from Spiritus have sent messages of solidarity to the patient, who remains linked to the sport as a baseball coach.

“The young Yoanis Delgado, player of the Sancti Spíritus team, son of José Raúl Delgado, is fighting like a warrior for his life in the intensive care room at the Camilo Cienfuegos hospital. Let us unite our prayers,” said Yudith Castillo Ruiz .

Born in 1982 in the Espirituan municipality of Yaguajay, Delgado Pedroso played in the Gallos de Sancti Spíritus team for ten national series, from the 2000-2001 season to 2009-2010. With Los Gallos he represented the island in the Youth Baseball World Cup in Canada (2000), the Haarlem International Tournament (2002), in the Netherlands, and the University Baseball World Cup Messina (2002), in Italy.

Delgado Pedroso played in the receiver position and was part of the team that won the national championship subtitle in the 41st National Series (2001-2002).
