NEW YORK – Former Mets executive Zack Scott was acquitted Thursday of drunk driving charges stemming from a Sept. 1 arrest in White Plains, New York. Scott received a couple of $ 100 fines for traffic violations, but was found not guilty of two other more severe charges, including drunk driving.
“I am grateful for today’s verdict,” Scott wrote in a statement. “However, I regret the decisions I made on August 31, which resulted in circumstances that led to my arrest.”
The Mets did not release a statement on the verdict.
Hired as an assistant general manager last winter, Scott became the interim GG when the club fired Jared Porter in January. He was in charge of the team’s baseball operations department for eight months, until the Mets placed him on administrative leave after his arrest. Two months later, the Mets fired Scott, who was still under contract. They then hired Billy Eppler to replace him as GG.
The night of his arrest, Scott had attended an event at the residence of Mets owner Steve Cohen, although the event ended hours before the arrest.
“While we understand and appreciate the reasons why the police officers suspected that Mr. Scott was driving while intoxicated, and we respected their decision to place him under arrest, the simple reality was that Mr. Scott was not under the influence of the alcohol that night, ”Scott’s attorney, Bruce Bendish, wrote in a statement. “Instead, the evidence strongly showed that Mr. Scott’s ability to drive a vehicle was not impaired by the use of alcohol.”
Scott spent 17 seasons in the Red Sox organization, before coming to the Mets last winter. For the past two years, he was the assistant general manager in charge of oversight of the analytics, advanced baseball systems, and talent appraisal departments at the professional level. Since his departure, the Mets have restructured their management, with club president Sandy Alderson at the helm of a group led by Eppler and his assistants Bryn Alderson, Ian Levin and Ben Zauzmer.
