Rockies thunder and split doubleheader

CHICAGO – Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 13-10 on Wednesday night, splitting wins in a double run.

Brendan Rodgers had a two-touchdown double after Ryan McMahon’s home run on the doubleheader that included nearly as many innings as before the pandemic.

The Cubs won the first game 5-2 in just two hours and nine minutes, thanks to a three-run homer from Patrick Wisdom, which broke the tie in the fifth inning.

The nightly duel lasted almost twice as long – 4:18 hours. The teams ended up playing 17 innings combined.

Major League Baseball shortened doubleheader games to seven innings from last year to avoid burnout in the face of numerous postponements from COVID-19. The rule remained in place this season.

McMahon hit his hit off Jake Jewell (0-2) across left field for 19 homers. Rodgers, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning, hit his double down the left-field line.

Ben Bowden (3-2), the eighth of nine Colorado pitchers, got four outs to pocket the win.

Hours earlier, Wisdom continued with a season that has been a revelation at 29 years old. He found a 1-1 Austin Gomber slider and sent the ball over the left field bleachers onto Waveland Avenue for his 21st home run. Wisdom started the season with four home runs over 48 games in three seasons with the Cardinals, Rangers and Cubs.

David Bote and Austin Romine also homered for Chicago, which won its second straight game at Wrigley Field after setting an undesirable team record with 13 straight losses at home.

Chicago is 4-4 overall after a 12-game losing streak.

CJ Cron hit his 22nd home run for the Rockies.

In the first game, for the Cubs, the Venezuelan Rafael Ortega 3-0. The Dominican Sergio Alcántara 2-0.

In the second match, for the Rockies, Venezuelans Elías Díaz 5-1 with two runs scored, Germán Márquez 1-1.

For the Cubs, Venezuelans Ortega 5-1 with a run scored and an RBI, Robinson Chirinos 4-1 with two RBIs. The Dominican Alcántara 5-1 with a run scored and an RBI.
