Wander Franco, shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays, extended his historic string of games on Sunday to 35, hitting a double between center and left in the seventh inning of the game against the Minnesota Twins at Tropicana Field, further adding to the feat.
Franco’s 35-game streak is the third longest by a player 20 years or younger in LA / LN history, behind two Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle (36 games, 1951-1952). and Frank Robinson (43 in 1956).
Age aside, Franco’s streak is the longest for a rookie shortstop since compatriot Hanley Ramirez had a 36-game run for the Marlins in 2006. It’s also the longest active streak in the majors, the longest. for a rookie in Rays history and the longest in a season for a Rays player since Johnny Damon reached base in 39 straight games between May 3 and June 14, 2011.
Franco struck out for the first time in 41 trips to the plate when he dropped to Griffin Jax in the fifth inning on Sunday, but he hasn’t gone a full game without reaching base since going 5-0 against the Indians on July 24 at Progressive. Field.
