The New York Yankees signed veteran right-hander Ryan Weber with a minor league contract. The right-handed pitcher was a minor league free agent, which allowed him to sign a 40-man non-roster deal during the ongoing strike freeze.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Weber has pitched in the major leagues in each of the past seven years. The sinker pitcher has worked in swingman capacity, starting 16 of his 63 appearances and totaling 167 cumulative innings:
While he only struck out 14.9% of batters faced at the MLB level, Weber has shown excellent control (5.4% walk rate) and racked up ground balls on more than half the balls in play against him.
The 31-year-old only made four MLB appearances last season, though he came in with three different teams. He made an exit each with the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers and pitched in a couple of games for the Seattle Mariners.
