MLB: Why would the Cardinals wait until 2023 to explore a contract extension for Jack Flaherty?

The young man right-handed Jack Flaherty is scheduled for free agency after the 2023 season, but even with the team’s control of the St.Louis Cardinals slowing down, it is believed that the rojiblanco club will wait until next spring to really delve into extension talks.

After a breakout 2019 season, Flaherty struggled in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, and then He pitched just 78 1/3 innings last year due to oblique and shoulder injuries.:

Given that any extension offer from the Cardinals in the near future is likely to be tempered by this recent track record, Flaherty himself would likely prefer to restore his value with a healthy and productive 2022 season before committing to a longer-term deal.

Flaherty is projected to receive a $5.1MM salary next year through arbitration, and even those short-term talks will be interesting considering Flaherty and the Cardinals went to a hearing (won by Flaherty) last spring.

That is how I came to Al Bat, where I have been since 2019 as a web journalist.
