MLB: Welcome to the nest, Cardinals sign Dominican infielder and right-hand pitcher

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that they agreed to minor league contracts with the infielder, Anderson Tejeda, and right-hander James Naile. Both players will receive invitations to major league spring training. In addition, St. Louis surpassed the right Ljay Newsome through absolute waivers.

Tejeda has appeared briefly in the majors in each of the past two seasons, adding 94 combined plate appearances with the Texas Rangers. He’s hit just .220 / .245 / .385 in that time, and he’s coming off a tough season:

The ambidextrous infielder posted just one line of .194 / .266 / .368 in 318 plate appearances across three levels in the minors in 2021, prompting Texas to remove him from their 40-man roster after the season. . Tejeda had enough time of service in the minor leagues to choose free agency.

It hasn’t been a great performance for Tejeda recently, but she’s still only 23 years old. Baseball America placed him in the top ten prospects in the Texas system on three separate occasions, including last season’s inning.

He appeared twice on the Top 100 Prospects lists on Baseball Prospectus. There is little harm to St. Louis in throwing a shuttlecock at a still-young player to see if a change of scenery can unlock some of the infield’s mighty mid-defense that made him a highly respected prospect:

The Cardinals just claimed Newsome from the Mariners waivers last month. He does not have the required service time to elect free agency, so he will remain in the St. Louis organization as a non-member of the 40 roster. The 25-year-old has twelve major league appearances (five starts) in his career. have, with 30 1/3 innings of 6.53 ERA to prove it.

Newsome doesn’t throw especially hard or miss many swings, but he has posted extremely low ticket rates throughout his minor league career and can work as a multi-inning starter or reliever.

He underwent Tommy John surgery sometime last summer, so it remains to be seen when he’ll be healthy enough to try and get back to the 40-man roster.

Lastly, James Naile belonged to the Oakland Athletics from 2015 to 2021. He is now 28 years old and has not made his MLB debut, even though he was 8-0 and 4.04 this summer in 51 relief starts at Triple A.
