MLB: This Venezuelan would be the Yankees’ starting left fielder in the future

Oswaldo Cabrera struggled to get off to a flying start with the New York Yankees for weeks after being called up from Triple-A Scranton. But now he seems like a different player.

Cabrera has been so good lately building a strong career to be the left fielder for the Yankees of the future if the organization manages to re-sign Aaron Judge. Even if they can’t keep Judge, he could have a role as a situational outfielder while making some starts at shortstop, second and third base, too.

Cabrera enters the last week of September hitting .233/.301/.408 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 34 games and 120 plate appearances with the Yankees. However, the Venezuelan has taken the line from him to that of a midfielder after falling early in his MLB career.

The Yankees have current and future production with Cabrera

That number is also on the rise. Cabrera has been brilliant for the Yankees in the last seven games, hitting .348/.444/.870 with three home runs and nine RBIs in that span.

His big game extends to his last 15 games, as he’s hitting .294/.390/.608 with four homers and 13 RBIs. Simply put, he has been a godsend for the Yankees. In addition to his offensive improvement, Cabrera has been brilliant with glove in hand. As long as he plays on the field, that he is not the main position for him.

With Judge in the offing for the future, he would play right field; Cabrera can play on the left, and Harrison Bader would be the center fielder, with Aaron Hicks around as a backup if the team can’t trade him and Giancarlo Stanton as the designated hitter.

All in all, Cabrera looks like an asset for the future, with six years in control of the team after 2022 and a myriad of possible avenues to play if he can continue to improve as a hitter.
