MLB: Injuries and contracts of Scherzer and Lindor could condition DeGrom’s extension in Mets

In recent years, New York Mets right-hander Jacob DeGrom, has become one of the best pitchers we’ve seen in recent times in MLB, going from being just another starter to a practically untouchable pitcher. However, if something characterizes DeGrom it is his incredible bad luck, either due to injuries or because the Mets themselves don’t support their ace’s excellent starts.

Now, that bad luck could extend to his contract situation, as DeGrom will become a free agent at the end of the 2023 season, having an option for 2024, as well as an option to opt out of his contract at the end of the 2022 season. and according to information from Ken Davidoff of The New York Post, the Mets would not see DeGrom’s extension beyond 2023 as an “absolute priority” at this time compared to the sensations at the beginning of 2021.

For starters, Davidoff mentions the massive contracts the Mets have signed in the past two offseasons, like Francisco Lindor’s 10-year, $341 million deal; and that of Max Scherzer for 130 million and three seasons, could prevent DeGrom from signing one of his own of such magnitudes, also depending on how the luxury tax and its limits remain in the new joint contract between MLB and the MLBPA.

Another aspect to consider is his age and injuries: DeGrom was having a historic 2021 and headed for his third Cy Young Award; however, his season ended on July 7 due to elbow inflammation, marking the first time since the 2016 campaign (and excluding the shortened 2020 season) that he did not reach 200 innings worked, also fearing that these injuries are aggravated with age, since he is about to turn 34 years old.

With salaries of more than $34 million a year in all the seasons remaining on his contract, it remains to be seen if both sides decide to stick around until DeGrom’s career is over or if the right-hander wants to continue elsewhere.

I’m a fan of the San Francisco Giants, number one defender of Barry Bonds, and hater of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto and Ronald Acuña are the future of baseball, Mike Trout is overrated, and the Astros deserved to have the World Series taken from them for their cheating. Besides baseball, I also enjoy football, flag football, basketball, and just about any other game that involves a ball or ball. I’m also an amateur musician, a penniless gamer and very nerdy.
