The Oakland Athletics have long been the franchise who popularized the moneyball, which is an approach where they try to minimize costs as much as possible, obtaining the greatest possible benefit. However, this has already been taken to quite worrying extremes, since not only do they play in perhaps the worst stadium of all MLB without renovations and clear plans for a move, but now they have one of the lowest payrolls.
After the changes they made in the offseason, the A’s sold their best pieces and reduced their payroll to a total of $48.5 million in their active roster. In contrast, former A’s prospect and current NFL player for the Arizona Cardinals, Kyler Murray, just signed a 5-year, $230.5 million contract extension.
This will earn Murray an average annual salary of $46.1 million per season, just $2.4 million less than the Oakland A’s current total payroll, with the highest-paid player currently on the A’s roster being Stephen Piscotty, who is earning $7.2 million this season.
The Oakland Athletics have the second-lowest payroll in all of MLB this season, trailing only the Baltimore Orioles.
