Albert Pujols is perhaps the last player, along with Miguel Cabrera, Nelson Cruz and some others how Justin Verlander or Zack Greinkewho once came to share a playing field in MLB with the Stars from the 90’s and early 2000’s in full transition of the Age of Steroids, coinciding with players like Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Sammy Sosa and mainly Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens, the latter two left out of the Hall of Fame in their 10th and final year on the ballot.
Albert Pujols himself has arguments to say that he is one of the best of all time who has passed through the Major Leagues, but for him the old guard with whom he played when he was still young deserves all his respect, which he demonstrated in an interview through IG Live that he had with the Dominican journalist Yancen Pujols in 2020, he mentioned that for him Bonds is ‘the best’ in the business.
Barry… How do I tell you? If I am going to say, the best, the best, is him. The best that has passed through this business, the best, Barry. And look, it was one and two in MVP between him and me, people tell me ‘Wow, if it wasn’t for Barry Bonds you would have 7 MVP’s’ but I tell them look, I’m grateful to the three that I have. That man deserves every MVP he has earned, he was the best
Pujols comments that he did not spend as much time with Barry as he did with his Dominican “compadres” such as Big Papi, A-Rod, Pedro Martínez or Adrián Beltré, but that whenever they saw each other at the All-Star Games or in the Giants-Cardinals games at that time, they always had a very good relationship and consider each other friends.
