Once Major League Baseball and MLBPA reach an agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the approach of the Dodgers will change immediately to try to improve his roster of Big leagues. Until then, the Los Angeles crew spends a lot of time evaluating their system of minor leagues.
The Dodgers’ lack of depth was a weakness last season. But if key prospect development goes according to plan, Los Angeles believes the next crop of MLB-ready prospects can give it a much-needed boost in 2022. Next Up the best prospects who could be of great help in the big team:
1. RHP Bobby miller
MLB Pipeline: No. 4 prospect in the organization.
With some key outings, the Dodgers will need help in the starting rotation sometime next season. Miller, the team’s first-round pick in ’20, is perhaps the most talented pitching prospect in the Minors and will receive many looks. The right-hander struck out 70 batters in 56 1/3 innings in his first season in the minors. He struggled a bit in the Arizona Fall League, but the Dodgers are in love with his raw material. Miller’s four-seam fastball shoots up in the upper 90s. Combine that with a delete slider, a developing curve, and a solid shift.
2. RHP Ryan pepiot
MLB Pipeline: No. 2 prospect in the organization.
You can easily argue that 24-year-old Pepiot was ready to contribute last season, but the Dodgers didn’t want to rush his development. Barring injuries, the Dodgers expect Pepiot to play a big role next season. Pepiot impressed the Dodgers at the alternate site in ’20. He continued to dominate with Double-A Tulsa, posting a 2.87 ERA in 15 appearances.
3) INF Miguel Vargas
MLB Pipeline: No. 6 prospect in the organization.
The Dodgers’ biggest weakness last season was their position as a depth player. After being named the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year in ’21, Vargas is expected to give the Dodgers another quality position player option next season.
Vargas always had average hitting ability and that continued in ’21 when he hit .319, including a .321 clip with Double-A Tulsa. But Vargas’ biggest improvement last season was his ability to hit for power. The Cuban infielder hit 23 home runs, the most of his career. He had just nine during his first two minor league seasons.
The Dodgers see Vargas as a third baseman, but he is also capable of playing at first base, which should increase his chances of making his debut sometime next season.
