MLB: Brewers assigns 7-foot-plus pitcher and raises top pitching prospect

The Milwaukee Brewers announced on Monday that designated right-hander Connor Sadzeck for assignment and recalled pitching prospect Ethan Small from Triple-A Nashville instead. Small is likely to get the go-ahead to start Tuesday’s game, which the Brewers had listed as “TBD” — to be designated.

Sadzeck, 30, appeared in two games with the Brewers and allowed three runs in three innings of relief work before today’s DFA. He posted big numbers in Nashville, posting a 0.86 ERA and a 30.7% strikeout rate against a 10.5% walk rate in 28 innings, but his 97-mph fastball once averaged a 95-mph slowdown in his limited work with milwaukee

The 6-foot-1 Sadzeck has long been an intriguing arm thanks to his speed and ability to miss bats, but control issues and injuries have continually dogged him throughout his pro career. The Brewers will have a week to trade him, release him or try to get him through direct waivers.

Small, the 28th overall pick in 2019, he’ll make only his second career start if he picks up the ball tomorrow. He was tagged for three runs in 2 2/3 innings in his MLB debut earlier this season, but posted a solid 3.34 ERA and 26.4% strikeout rate in 72 2/3 Triple-A innings this year. .

Command has been the big blow for Small for much of his pro career, and this year’s 13% walk rate in Triple-A hasn’t allayed those concerns. However, Small still looms as a potential fourth starter, with scouting reports in Baseball America, FanGraphs and MLB.com praising his solid fastball and his changeup.
