MLB: Angels already have a Bench Coach and he’s someone who has never been on a GL coaching staff

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are hiring the Director of Player Personnel, Ray Montgomery, as your Banking Coach. Montgomery had emerged as a candidate for the position.

It’s an interesting hiring, since Montgomery hasn’t worked on a major league coaching staff yet. However, the 52-year-old has a lot of experience in scouting and front office roles. That includes stints as scouting director with the Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks:

After being hired as the Angels’ general manager during the 2019-20 offseason, Perry Minasian quickly added the New York native to the Anaheim front office. Montgomery also has some playing experience, having briefly appeared in the majors as an outfielder with the Houston Astros in the late 1990s.

It’s not entirely clear what role former bench coach Mike Gallego will play in the future. He is expected to remain on Joe Maddon’s staff in some way. Gallego could return as a third base coach, a position he held in 2019.

Apparently Phil Nevin had been named third base coach in November, but that may no longer be the case. Nevin’s role with the Angels has yet to be determined, but he is still expected to take on some role on Maddon’s staff.

I am fond of the King of Sports, especially the Boston Red Sox in MLB and in general all of Mexican baseball. This profession has given me the opportunity to cover major events such as the Caribbean Series, the LMB All Star, LMP (uninterrupted since 2009), signings of important players. I had the chance to attend the 2013 World Classic in Arizona, USA, albeit as a fan. Apart from this beautiful sport, I love basketball, where I have also narrated games and even a friendly NBA 10 years ago, but I carry baseball in my veins. My cycle there ended in July 2019 and within days, El Debate gave me another opportunity to work and opened the doors for me again. That is how I came to Al Bat, where I have been since 2019 as a web journalist.
