Michael Conforto returns to Mets lineup

The New York Mets are poised to get a boost to their lineup with the return of the starting right fielder. Michael Conforto, who will be reinstated from the disabled list Tuesday, said interim general manager Zack Scott.

Conforto’s return comes a day after the starting second baseman Jeff McNeil was reinstated from the disabled list. Both Conforto and McNeil were out of the game for several weeks with hamstring injuries.

However, the news about the injuries was not entirely positive, as Scott announced that the left-hander Joey lucchesi will undergo surgery on Tommy John after an MRI revealed he had a torn elbow ligament. Lucchesi is 1-4 with a 4.46 ERA this season, but had been pitching better recently before his injury.

“He’s doing very well, he actually exceeded our expectations,” Scott told reporters of Conforto, who has been out of the game since he injured his hamstring on May 16.

McNeil had also been out of the game since May 16 before appearing in both games of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

The Mets rank first in the NL East despite injuries to several starters, including Conforto, McNeil, third baseman. JD Davis and the center fielder Brandon nimmo. Nimmo is currently on a rehab assignment and could be about to return.

The Mets have scored the second-fewest runs (246) in the National League coming into Tuesday, but are tied for the lead in the National League with a 3.12 ERA.
