Marwin, at his “house”, wants another ring

HOUSTON – Like compatriot José Altuve and other core Astros figures of the past decade, Venezuelan Marwin González suffered part of the span of three consecutive 100-loss seasons, before savoring the club’s good times since 2015.

Gonzalez, one of the most versatile players of the last decade at the Major League level, returned to Houston in late August this year after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox. Although he was not on the Siderales ‘roster for the first two rounds of the postseason, he was included in the roster for the World Series against the Braves because of outfielder Jake Meyers’ persistent left shoulder injury.

“Marwin is a switch hitter,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said of the decision to put Gonzalez on the roster. “He gives me a lot of flexibility in positions and has experience in the World Series, so you know that the game or the situation is not going to be too big for him.”

A member of Houston’s champion team in 2017, when he hit a crucial home run to tie Game 2 of that Fall Classic against the Dodgers, González is happy to be an active part of another edition of the Siderales looking for a ring.

“It feels pretty good,” said Gonzalez, who first played with the Astros from 2012 to 2018. “I was here watching the guys play the first two series and I was really excited to be here. Now that I’m on the roster, it feels even better. It is a special feeling to be here ”.

González, who played for the Twins in 2019 and 2020 before signing with the Red Sox prior to this season, has strong ties to the organization and the Space City fans.

“I think that after playing so long in a team… I played here for seven years and there are several of the boys,” said González, 32 years old. “It would be difficult to think this is not my home.”

And now, playing in his sixth postseason, the Puerto Ordaz native yearns to celebrate again after the last game of the year.

“Not for me, for everyone,” he said about it. “Everyone who is here wants to win a ring and it would be special for everyone.”
