The New York Yankees have not yet announced their decision regarding starting shortstop in the 2022 season in the MLB.
The lockout of Big leagues has delayed the resolution of this unknown, in which there are several possible scenarios.
An analysis by Joel Sherman for the New York Post suggests that the Yankees could look for a defensive-oriented shortstop, like the veteran free agent Andrelton Simmons. This would be a stopgap solution until prospects Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe are ready to play in the majors.
Sherman adds that the Yankees haven’t publicly disclosed their shortstop plan for the upcoming 2022 season. It’s unclear if they’ll make a big financial commitment to top free agents. Sherman is concerned that Peraza, who was added to the 40-man roster, could be affected by a truncated spring training.
Former Boston Red Sox first base coach Tom Goodwin was unable to participate in the 2021 postseason due to restrictions imposed by MLB on unvaccinated staff personnel. Goodwin believes it was unfair to him and the rest of the staff.
“I’ve never been an anti-vaccine guy. I didn’t feel like it was right the way MLB was doing it,” Goodwin told The Athletic. “I really felt like we were being bullied”
Major league players are not required to be vaccinated. Goodwin, 53, received the vaccine this offseason.
Chris Paddack’s forearm and elbow is a concern for the San Diego Padres as he finished the 2021 season on the disabled list.
Manager AJ Preller told general managers meetings that Paddack, who missed the 2017 season with Tommy John surgery, was set to start a pitching program the first week of December and his status is a big question mark for the rotation at 2022.
