Josh Donaldson is confused with a home run and is taken out at first base

The infielder thought he had homered and walked the bases as such, but ended up being out at first.

New York Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson looked very confused today after hitting a home run – which was never really a home run – to right field at Yankee Stadium in Game 1 of the Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning, Donaldson hit a sinker by Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill.

The ball made its way to right field, but hit the corner of the fence and didn’t cross for a home run, though Donaldson thought it did and casually rounded the bases. On the other hand, outfielder Oscar González, who did a spectacular fielding job with the hit, threw a perfect throw to second base and then to first, where the infielder ended up being out.

Donaldson argued that he hit a home run. The referees reviewed the play and it showed that the ball hit the top of the wall and bounced inside. It was then ruled that Donaldson had singled and therefore ended up being out at first.

Despite the play, the Yankees ended up getting ahead on the scoreboard with a home run – this one really – by first baseman Anthony Rizzo and winning the first of the series against Cleveland thanks to the incredible pitching work of Gerrit Cole.
