How does the market look for Correa now?

It seemed that the Tigers were one of the favorites to take over Puerto Rican Carlos Correa this offseason. However, the club filled its vacancy at shortstop on Tuesday, agreeing to a six-year, $ 140 million (according to a source) with the also Puerto Rican Javier Báez. He is the third free agent shortstop to reach an agreement in recent days, following the signings of Corey seager and Marcus semien with the Rangers.

Correa is expected to agree to a deal similar to the 10-year, $ 325 million deal Seager made with Texas, but it’s unclear which team could award him that type of contract.

MLB Network analyst Ken Rosenthal mentioned several likely destinations for Correa in an article in The Athletic (subscription required).

The Astros, Dodgers, Yankees, Mariners, Cardinals, Phillies, Blue Jays, Angels and Red Sox are the teams that could be in the running for shortstop, according to Rosenthal.

Houston has remained in contact with Correa, reports Rosenthal. However, the most recent offer made to the Ponce native was for $ 160 million.

The Dodgers need a replacement for Seager’s bat, but that doesn’t mean he has to be a shortstop necessarily, understanding that the Blues have Trea Turner on the roster. The Yankees need shortstop, but they haven’t been active on the free market.

St. Louis, Philadelphia and the Angels have high-paying players and seem to be focused on pitching. Seattle is committed to JP Crawford at the position. Toronto has a spot in the infield after Semien’s departure, but would have to move Bo Bichette from shortstop to make the spot for the Puerto Rican. Similarly, Boston has Xander Bogaerts in the short stops and, although the player has an option to exit his contract after 2022, the club could be reluctant to such a large contract, after not wanting to commit a high amount to Mookie Betts.

The Cubs and Nationals are two surprise teams that could take Correa. Although both were “sellers” at the last trade deadline, neither is contemplating a massive rebuild.
