In December 2017, the change of the star of the MLB Miguel Cabrera and pitcher Dontrelle Willis of the Marlins (then from Florida) to the Detroit Tigers.
The Marlins they wanted with this negotiation to get key prospects for their farms.
Once the deal was finalized, they went to Florida outfielder Cameron Maybin, pitcher Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and minor league pitchers Eulogio De La Cruz, Dallas Trahern and Burke Badenhop.
What Cabrera achieved with the Tigers is widely known: the triple batting crown and two MVP awards, among other achievements. In 2022 he will complete 20 career seasons and will continue to be active for one more year, if injuries allow it.
But what became of that group that delivered Detroit? Did the Marlins get what they hoped for?
Maybin just announced his retirement after 15 seasons in the majors. He spent four years with the Marlins, but in two stages and in that time he left an offensive line of .255/.328/.375, with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs.
Lefty Miller is still active and a free agent. He stayed with the Marlins for three seasons, a period in which he made 41 starts, went 10-20 with a 5.89 ERA. He struck out 176 batters at 220.0 IL.
Rabelo only wore a Marlins uniform for 34 games in the 2008 season (he hit .202/.256/.294, 10 RBIs and 3 home runs). He did not play in the Major Leagues again after that.
Badenhop pitched 8 years in the majors, 4 of them with the Marlins, who used him primarily as a reliever. He posted numbers of 13-15, 4.34 ERA and 190 strikeouts in 250.2 innings.
Still, he fared better than right-hander Trahern, who never pitched in the majors.
For his part, the Dominican De La Cruz, who died in March 2021 at the age of 37, was only with the Marlins in 2018 and did not look good: he had an ERA of 18.00, in 6 games he only pitched 9 innings (only had one start) and had just 4 strikeouts. The last time he pitched in MLB was in 2011.
