Grisham hits 2 HRs and Padres beat Reds

CINCINNATI – Trent Grisham hit a grand slam and solo home run and the San Diego Padres trailed behind for their 11th win in 12 games as they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 on Wednesday night in a game cut to six innings by the rain.

Grisham’s first career grand slam, a fifth-inning tackle off reliever John Osich, put San Diego in front and gave the Padres their sixth straight win over Cincinnati in the past two weeks.

The game was stopped with one out in the top of the sixth and in the middle of a thunderstorm. It was declared official after a 93-minute delay.

Grisham and Wil Myers hit back-to-back home runs with no people on base in the second inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 26th home run of the season – the NL leading – to open the third inning.

Nick Castellanos, second in All-Star voting among National League outfielders, hit a three-run homer as part of a four-touchdown attack by the Reds in the first inning.

Joey Votto blew out the right-field fence to start the third inning – his 1,000th career RBI of his major league career – but the Reds’ bullpen, the worst in the Big Top, quickly let the lead slip away 5-3.

Osich relieved starter Vladimir Gutierrez (3-3) with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, and Grisham tangled with a 1-2 slider and deposited him in the seats behind the right-field fence.

Joe Musgrove (5-6) took the victory despite conceding five touchdowns and four hits in four innings.

For the Padres, the Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. 3-2 with one RBI and two runs; Manny Machado 2-0 with a run scored. Puerto Rican Victor Caratini 3-0.

For the Reds, the Mexican Alejo López 2-0. Cuban Vladimir Gutiérrez 2-0.
