Francona will return to the command of Guardians

CLEVELAND – Cleveland’s coaching staff is ready.

The Guardians announced the promotion of Joe Torres as assistant pitching coach, confirming intentions to bring back Terry Francona as manager.

Francona’s future with Cleveland looked a bit cloudy last July, when he had to step down from his position for the second year in a row due to health issues. This time around, he had to have his hip replaced, before undergoing a procedure to heal a foot infection he had been dealing with since January 2021. By then, the 62-year-old helmsman appeared to be in low spirits, expecting to have a chance to recover enough to return for training in 2022. When he spoke to reporters earlier in the offseason, he was looking much better emotionally.

When Francona left the team in July, he was just six wins away from becoming the winningest manager in Cleveland history, surpassing Lou Boudreau. For the rest of the season — with DeMarlo Hale at the helm — Cleveland was in limbo, awaiting Francona’s future.

It was determined that if he could resume his role in 2022, the remainder of the 2021 victories that occurred under Hale would go to Francona. If he didn’t come back, the wins would go to Hale. But since he will return in 2022, Francona now holds the record for wins (753) and is 24 games away from breaking Boudreau’s club record of 1,377 games coached.

With Francona back, the coaching staff will look much the same, with the exception of two new faces.

The Guardians announced they acquired Chris Valaika from the Cubs to replace Ty Van Burkleo as hitting coach. On Wednesday, the club announced that Torres, who had spent the past two years with the organization, would be an assistant pitching coach to Carl Willis. Torres replaces Rubén Niebla, who was hired by the Padres.
