Four options the Yankees have to make up for losses of Cole and Taillon due to injury

In the second half of his Monday outing, Jameson taillon he felt something on his right ankle. Three days later, that “something” put Taillon on the 10-day disabled list. Taillon suffered a partial tendon tear in his right ankle, which will keep him away at least until next Thursday. The manager of the Yankees, Aaron booneHe expects his starter to miss only one rotation in the rotation, but he could offer little more than we “will see” on that subject.

For now, Taillon is in a walking boot. But it is expected to unravel that Friday and relaunch on the weekend. How comfortable you are throwing, and how quickly you can do it again from a mound, will help determine your readiness to return to game action.

What is known for sure is that someone has to start on Sunday and it will not be Taillon. Nor will it be Gerrit cole, who left Tuesday’s game prematurely with a hamstring strain and is on track to start on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Who, then, gets the ball on Sunday? Here’s a look at four candidates:

Andrew Heaney
The most experienced starter is undoubtedly Heaney, who went from the Angels ‘rotation to the Yankees’ rotation at the trade deadline. But after five at-bats as a poor starter in New York, he was taken to the bullpen. The results did not improve.

Heaney has allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief, including the missed save and loss he suffered against Baltimore last weekend. However, Boone gave Heaney a vote of confidence Thursday and outlined a wide range of situations Heaney could find himself working in.

“For Andrew, he’s been a bit of a bad luck victim,” Boone said. “But he’s going to consider, either in some kind of starting role here soon, or in [relevo] massive, or even find yourself in a high-leverage place. That is the reality, and it certainly is capable of doing it. “

The candidacy of Clarke schmidt it is born out of convenience, at least up to a point. He last pitched for Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre on Sept. 5, which means he must pitch again on Saturday. If the Yankees wanted to, they could delay him a day and call him.

In his three major league outings, all from last season, Schmidt started one game and finished two more. He allowed five runs (7.11 ERA) in that span. On a brighter note, he has a 2.96 ERA in 27 1/3 innings at four minor league levels this year.

Boone said Schmidt is under consideration, “if it’s a start, if it’s off the pen, whatever.”

It is expected that Michael King King triggered Friday from the 60-day IL, which means the Yankees are likely to use it before Sunday’s game. He has a 3.72 ERA in 14 games (six starts) for New York this year, and he’s prepared to pitch at least three innings. That was his workload last Tuesday, when he allowed one run and struck out six at Triple-A.

In the interest of keeping options open, Boone said King “could take into account” Sunday’s plan. But if you see him on the mound on Friday or Saturday, you know that’s not happening.

Deivi Garcia
Garcia’s eight major league appearances have made headlines, including two this season. But he last pitched Sept. 4 at Triple-A, so it might be a bit of a stretch to think the Yankees would save him for Sunday.

Garcia was with the Yankees as a member of the taxi squad for the series finale Thursday, but Boone made it clear that Garcia probably won’t be activated to start this weekend.

“No, not necessarily,” Boone said. “Look, especially with what we’ve been through [con las lesiones] lately, anything is possible, certainly. But no, not necessarily ”.
