FIRST SILVER FOR CUBA: Yoenlis Hernández ARRASÓ and will be in the final

By José Alejandro Rodríguez Zas

The Camagüeyan boxer Yoenlis Hernandez (41-12) gave Cuba its first silver medal in this 21st edition of the World Boxing Championship, which has been held since November 24 at the Stark Arena in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.

Yoenlis swept the Italian Salvatore Cavallaro (ITA, 61-28) in one of the semifinals of the 75 kg division and defeated it by a unanimous decision of the judges of 5 × 0, with four identical ballots of 30-27, and even a fifth of 30-26, which evidenced the superiority of the Cuban over his opponent in the Serbian ring.

The fight was very entertaining from start to finish, with both boxers showing great skill on the ring and involved in constant exchanges, in which the Agramontino always got the best part, despite the excellent physical condition of the Italian who could not prevail over the Yoenlis technique.

In the third round, Cavallaro went out of his way to take down Yoenlis, but his efforts remained, time and again, in the Cuban’s defense. In this way, Yoenlis guaranteed his pass to the final of the division, take home the silver medal and secured an economic loot of at least 50 thousand dollars.

The Cuban boxer will return to the ring tomorrow, Friday, November 5, in search of being crowned as the universal holder of the 75 kg in this Boxing World Cup. To do this, he must defeat the difficult Russian fighter Dzhambulat Bizhamov (34-3) who seems like a rival out of Yoenlis’s reach, but given the sporting form that this Cuban boxer has shown in the contest, he doesn’t seem like an impossible opponent for him.

Cuba added its 21st victory in the contest with only three defeats and has already secured its first boxer in the final of this World Boxing Championship. Today another four representatives of the Cuban boxing squad will come out to the ring in search of passing the semifinal stage.
