Fight between Mariners and Angels leaves 8 expelled

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels got into a long, full-team fight in the second inning Sunday after tensions boiled over over two days of stuck pitches.

Jesse Winkerof Seattle, was hit by the first pitch of the second inning by Angels starter, Andrew Wantzwho had also thrown a pitch behind the head of the second Mariners hitter, Julio Rodriguezin the first inning.

Six players and both coaches were ejected after the brawl that resulted in a delay of approximately 18 minutes.

Sent off by the Mariners were: Winker, Rodriguez, shortstop J. P. Crawford and manager Scott Servais. The Angels kicked out Wantz, the pitchers Ryan Tepera Y Raisel Iglesias and interim manager Phil Nevin.

The first pitch appeared to be a response to the 95 mph fastball from Erik Swanson near the head of Mike Trout on Saturday night, angering the three-time AL MVP.

Winker reacted to the pitch by yelling angrily and gesturing toward the Angels’ dugout, and the sides squared off moments later. The fight lasted about four minutes, with people from both teams appearing to throw multiple punches. The third baseman of the Angels, Anthony Rendonwho is out for the season with a right wrist injury, used his left hand to shove Winker in the face during the fight.

When Winker finally walked off the field, he appeared to make an obscene gesture to the heckling Angels fans behind the Seattle dugout.
