Dominican breaks its own record for wins in a row

With Gigantes de Cibao’s 5-3 victory over Criollos de Caguas on Saturday night, the Dominican Republic set a Caribbean Series record, breaking its own mark for most consecutive wins achieved just over two decades ago.

As a country, the Dominican Republic became the first team in history in the two stages of the Clásico Caribeño to add 14 consecutive victories, after losing for the last time in the second match of the 2020 series in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Dominican Republic surpassed the 13 wins in a row that it compiled from 1997 to 1999, when it won the three-time championship with Águilas Cibaeñas and Tigres de Licey.

The Eagles won the last four games of 1997 –two against Culiacán, one against Mayagüez, one against Magallanes–, they won the six in 1998 –two against Mayagüez, two against Lara, two against Mazatlán– and Tigres added the first three from 1999 –Lara, Mexicali and Mayagüez.

In 1997 Águilas lost to Magallanes 7-0 before starting the streak and in 1999 the Tigres suffered a setback in the fourth game against Lara 3-1, that is, both defeats were against Venezuelan teams.

The current streak began on February 3, 2020 by the Toros del Este, after losing a day earlier 3-2 against Cardenales de Lara, the team that broke the record in 1999. In 2020, Toros defeated Montería, Chiriquí , twice to Santurce and in the Final he took revenge on Lara.

In 2021 in Mazatlán, Águilas took seven wins in a row to reach 12, passing over Caguas, Culiacán, Chiriquí, Anzoátegui, Barranquilla, again over Chiriquí in the semifinal and over Caguas in the Final.

This year, last Friday the Dominican equaled its record of 13 wins in a row by beating Jalisco 3-2 and broke the mark with the 5-3 victory over Caguas. His next games in search of extending the streak are against Astronautas de Los Santos, Barranquilla and Magallanes.

Cuba had the record for most consecutive wins with 11, by winning the last 11 games of the first stage in 1959 and 1960. In 1959 they won the last five after losing the first, and in 1960 they finished undefeated in six.

The Dominican Republic also holds the record for most consecutive games without losing with 14, surpassing Cuba’s 12 from 1951 to 1953, when they won the last four of 1951, tied the first of 1952 and then won five, and added victories in the first two from 1953.
