DO rises in WBSC ranking, VEN and MEX without movement

Mexico and Venezuela retained positions five and ten, respectively, while the Dominican Republic rose one place to place number six in the global ranking of the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC), the body announced on Wednesday.

The Baseball World Ranking measures the performance of national teams, from U-12 to professional, in international competitions sanctioned by the WBSC over a four-year period. The new order includes even the results of the ball tournament of the Tokyo Olympics.

After winning the gold medal in Tokyo, Japan added 4,290 points to remain number one among 85 nations considered. South Korea, which finished fourth at the Olympics, rose to second place; Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) fell to third and the United States, a silver medalist in the Olympics, retained fourth place.

Mexico, which lost its three games in the Olympic Games, accumulates 2,270 points to be the second best-located country on the continent and the first among Latin American nations. Mexico scored 38 points for its sixth place in Tokyo.

The bronze medal obtained in Tokyo added 240 points to the Dominican Republic, which now totals 2,063, valid to climb to sixth place, equaling its best position in the history of the ranking.

In September 2017, the Dominican Republic occupied the # 16 rung of the ranking, mainly due to its absence from the majority of lower category tournaments that award points.

Venezuela, which lost the last game of the last qualifier to stay out of Tokyo, remained in 10th place, with 1,619 points. Cuba, which failed to advance to the Olympics for the first time, remained at # 11.

Puerto Rico rose from 14 to 12, Panama remained at number 13, Nicaragua fell from 12 to 14, Colombia remains at # 15, Brazil fell from 18 to 21, while Argentina retained # 25.
