Criollos de Caguas eliminated from the Caribbean Series

The Criollos de Caguas were eliminated from the Caribbean Series after losing 5-0 to the Charros de Jalisco, from Mexico, on the fourth day played on Monday at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic.

The ninth representative of Puerto Rico was forced to win to stay in the fight for one of the available tickets to the semifinal round, but the opportune hit never came.

“The frustration continues. We had the opportunity to make a run. Hit a big ball. It never came and hasn’t come in the four games we’ve played. It’s very difficult to come from behind all the time. Offensively, we haven’t been the team I know that we can be,” said manager Ramón Vázquez.

The Criollos left ten runners on base, for a total of 30 players waiting tow in four games during the Caribbean Classic.

In this way, the record of Caguas fell to 0-4 and it still does not know the victory in the round of all against all of the tournament that has the participation of six teams. This Tuesday, at 10:30 am, they will face the Caimanes de Barranquilla, from Colombia, to close their participation.

“There is still one game left. There is still pride. We are representing the country. I had to eliminate myself this time and thanks because you learn from this. The best thing is that it promises to be better in the next one,” added Vázquez.

For their part, the Charros achieved an important victory to place their record at 2-2 – occupying fourth place – and enter the fight for the semifinalist ticket.

The global table is led by the Gigantes del Cibao, from the Dominican Republic, with 3-0, followed by the Navegantes del Magallanes, from Venezuela, with 3-1. Both teams have already secured their ticket to the round of the best four.

Thus, there are only two tickets available for the semifinal that will be fought by the Caimanes, Charros and Astronautas de Los Santos, from Panama.

The Caymans – who will play the Giants tonight – are third at 2-1; while the Astronauts are fifth, with 1-3.

The Charros opened the scoring in the first inning when second baseman Jesús Esteban Quiróz hit a two-run homer off starter Oscar De La Cruz.

Then, a grounded double by first baseman Victor Mendoza and a line drive single by designated hitter Japhet Amador drove in the third and fourth runs, respectively, as Jalisco took off 4-0, in the third inning.

The Criollos had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded, but fourth batter David Vidal left all the runners on base.

In the sixth inning, Jalisco extended the lead 5-0, with an RBI single by third baseman Agustín Murillo off Carlos Francisco’s pitches.

De La Cruz took the loss; while Nick Struck charged with the win. Jake Sanchez got the save.

Caguas – champion of the Puerto Rican winter league – was looking for his sixth crown in the Caribbean Series, while manager Ramón Vázquez was once again left without the title for the third time.
