Best Players By Position In Mets History

We did a search for best players obtained by the organization of the Mets from New York by position.

Receiver: Mike Piazza

In his eight seasons with the Mets (1998-2005) in 3,484 at-bats he had 220 homers, 1,028 hits and averages of .296/.373/.542, an OPS of .915, with an impressive OPS+ of 136. In his career won four silver bats and he participated in six all-star games in a Queens team uniform.

Honorable Mentions: Gary Carter and Jerry Grote.

First Base: Keith Hernandez

One of the best first basemen the Mets organization has ever obtained. Although he was with the Mets for seven seasons (1983-1989), after being with the St. Louis Cardinals where he began his career and winning a world series in 1982, he earned the position. In 3,164 at-bats, he had 80 home runs, 939 hits , hitting .297/.387/.429, with an .816 OPS and a 129 OPS+. During his career he went to three all-star games, a silver bat, five gold gloves and a world series in 1986.

Honorable Mentions: Ed Kranepool and John Olerud.

Second Base: Edgardo Alfonzo

It must be said that he is one of the best second basemen in that organization, who has had problems in that position. The Venezuelan in his eight seasons (1995-2002) in 3,879 at-bats gave 120 home runs, 1,136 hits, averages of .292/.367/.445, with an OPS of .812, an OPS+ of 113 and an average of .306 balls in play. He is also a member of the Mets Hall of Fame. During his career in Queens he went to an all-star game and a silver slugger.

Honorable Mentions: Daniel Murphy and Wally Backman.

Shortstop (SS): Jose Reyes

It must be said that he is one of the best shortstops in the history of that organization. Reyes in his twelve seasons (2003-2011 and 2016-2018) in 5,437 at-bats gave 108 home runs, 1,534 hits, averages of .282/.334/.433, an OPS of .768, an OPS+ of 104. Dominican established marks such as having made 408 stolen bases and 113 triples. He was a silver bat winner in 2006 and four times he participated in the all-star game.

Third Base: David Wright

He is one of the best third basemen on the Mets and without a doubt the most beloved figure in Queens. He was the captain of the organization throughout his Mets career. In 14 seasons in the major leagues (2004-2006 and 2018), in 5,998 at-bats, he had 242 homers, 1,777 hits, averages of .296/.376/.491, an OPS of .867, a high OPS+ of 133 and a .339 ball-in-play average. In addition, he is the all-time leader in hits and doubles. He participated in seven all-star games, two gold gloves and two silver bats.

Honorable Mentions: Howard Johnson and Robin Ventura.

Right Field (RF): Dwight Evans

He has been one of the best athletes the Mets organization has ever had in that position. In his eight seasons (1983-1990) in 3,903 at-bats, he had 252 homers, 1,025 hits, averages of .263/.359/.520, with an OPS of .878, an impressive OPS+ of 145 and an average of balls in game .283. It should be noted that during his time in Queens he was rookie of the year in 1983, won two silver bats, a gold glove, in addition to being the leader in home runs, SLG, OPS and OPS+ in 1988 and a world series in 1986.

Honorable mentions: Michael Conforto and Rusty Staub.

Center Garden (CF): Carlos Beltrán

He was one of the best outfielders the Mets team had. The Puerto Rican in his seven seasons at the helm of the Mets (2005-2011), in 3,133 at-bats gave 149 home runs, 878 hits, averages of .280/.369/.500, an impressive .869 OPS and an OPS+ 129. Beltran was key in 2006 as they went as far as the NL Championship Series, which they lost in Game 7. During his time in Queens he went to four all-star games, two silver bats and one gold glove. He also racked up more WAR, homers and doubles than any other Mets outfielder.

Honorable Mentions: Mookie Wilson and Tommy Agee.

Left Field (LF): Cleon Jones

In his twelve seasons in Queens (1963, 1965-1975), in 4,223 at-bats, he had 93 home runs, 1,188 hits, averages of .281/.340/.406, an OPS of .746, an OPS+ of 111 and an average of . .315 balls in play. Jones was the one who got the last out of 1969. He was in an all-star game and a world series in 1969.

Honorable Mentions: Kevin McRenolds and Cliff Ford

Starting Pitcher: Tom Seaver

The best pitcher the Mets organization has ever had. In his twelve seasons in Queens (1967-1977 and 1983) in 3045.2 innings, he had a record of 198-124, an ERA of 2.57, with a WHIP of 1.08, 2541 strikeouts, an adjusted earned run average (ERA+) of 136 and a 2.67 independent pitching. The HOF member was a three-time cy young (1969, 1973 and 1975) and was a key pitcher in the Mets’ championship game in 1969.

Honorable Mentions: Dwight Gooden and Jacob deGrom.

Reliever: Billy Wagner

He is one of the best relievers the Queens team had. In his four seasons (2006-2009) in 189.2 innings, with a record of 5-5, with 101 saves, 2.37 ERA, 230 strikeouts and a 1.05 WHIP. He went to the all-star game twice.
