Being the son of Norge Luis Vera fills me with pride. This year I want to do great things

After impressing in the Dominican Republic, Norge Carlos Vera brings his fastball to the White Sox farm. One of the greatest promises of pitching, the man from Santiago reported to the Chicago complex in Arizona on Monday to continue his development towards the Major Leagues.

The Cuban, who saw action in the Dominican summer league and showed signs of his potential, spent several weeks in Miami with coach Maels Rodríguez at his 100 MPH Club academy, along with other youngsters who are also preparing to join in the spring.

“It has been a very good experience, a dream come true to come and sign with a Major League team and come to play with them,” Vera said. “I really liked what I did. I have prepared myself to come with better things this year. I want to do great things and great surprises are coming.”

The son of Norge Luis Vera, one of the best pitchers who has passed through the National Series, is 21 years old and was chosen as the prospect of “best fastball” and “best command” within the Chicago Minor Leagues, according to the specialized magazine Baseball America.

In February of last year, Vera and the White Sox reached an agreement with a bonus of $1.5 million, but it was in the Dominican where the white-legged perceived the true potential of the boy with his powerful arm that reached 100 miles per hour.

Rodríguez, who was the first to reach that speed in Cuba, has worked a lot on the mechanics with Vera, but his expectations have been exceeded during these weeks of training that have taken the promise to a higher place and would make him advance quickly in the Chicago system.

“He is not for the rookie league, but for another level, for double A and close to the Major Leagues,” Rodríguez explained. “He is very aware of his work, disciplined and if he continues as he is, we will have another Cuban representative in the Major Leagues. We have worked on pitching, control. The important thing is that he arrives healthy and ready to show what he has.”

Vera, who made the national team for the first time, escaped in early July 2019 before taking a flight to North Carolina for a traditional bilateral match between Cuba and the United States that was held against a team of university players from this country.

The young pitcher debuted in the Cuban league in 2019 with Santiago de Cuba and made 11 starts. He went 2-3 and posted a 3.79 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings, but from those days much was expected of him when compared to his father.

With her arrival at the Chicago complex and when the lockout ends to make way for spring, Vera will join her compatriots Luis Robert Moirán, José Abreu, Yoan Moncada, and Yasmani Grandal.

“I haven’t had the joy of meeting them and I think I’ll feel good with them,” added Vera. “I always talk to my father. It tells me to stay focused and do my job well. Being the son of Norge Luis Vera fills me with pride and forces me to be better every day. This year I want to do great things and great surprises are coming”.
