Baseball Federation defines the time to appoint a manager for the World Baseball Classic

The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation has drawn up its work, projects and activities agenda for the year 2022 just begun.

The 83rd season of Superior Baseball Double A, the National Team appointments to the World Baseball Classic and the affiliate program will dominate the federation calendar this year.

“Since before the arrival of the new year, we have been working on a comprehensive agenda, to continue promoting baseball as an instrument to train and develop better citizens. We will follow up on the projects that we started in 2021 and we will direct new initiatives to strengthen our sport ”, expressed the president of the Federation, Dr. José Quiles Rosas.

During the first months of the year, the Federation expects to make the appointments of the general manager and coaching staff for the World Classic, scheduled for the year 2023. In this way, it will look for people to replace Edwin Rodríguez and Alex Cora, who performed the function in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

“The World Baseball Classic is the most anticipated sporting event in Puerto Rico, after having reached the runner-up in the last two editions. It is important to know what will be the outcome of the conversations between Major League Baseball and the Baseball Players Association in order to have a clearer picture regarding the event, ”explained Quiles Rosas in terms of defining what has stopped the plans for the assembly of the international event.

However, the Baseball Federation has begun its movements to identify the new general manager of the team, with the aim of establishing conversations with the players that will make up the squad and eventually announcing the coaching staff.

“As it has been since the first edition of the World Baseball Classic, it is the Federation’s responsibility to organize the entire structure and make the necessary appointments to present the Puerto Rico team at this event. That was well ahead of time for the beginning of 2020, but the pandemic changed all plans, “the president explained.

Meanwhile, the Federation’s work agenda will face the COVID-19 pandemic for the third consecutive year, which could cause adjustments and important changes during its execution.

“As a health worker, I am aware of the challenge of organizing a work schedule in the midst of a pandemic, which is not yet showing signs of ending. It is a reality that we must face, but it will not let us sit idly by ”highlighted the federative leader.

Among the first items on the agenda is the affiliation program, which will start with the federative tournaments and then integrate other organizations. The project will include seminars by active resources in the Major Leagues.

During this month, the postseason of the Federation’s youth tournament will enter its culminating phase, which had the participation of 60 teams with young people between 15 and 19 years old.

In addition, preparations will continue for the upcoming Double A Superior Baseball season, with 43 franchises and more than 1,200 players. This year, the tournament will return to the night game format after four double-game Sunday seasons in its regular phase. Before the inauguration, scheduled for February 27 in Humacao, two preseason cups will be organized with the participation of the 2021 section leaders and champions.

In March, the Women’s National Team is scheduled to participate in a Caribbean Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It will have the participation of the main teams in the region. Also, the youth men’s teams will be continued in qualifying events. After the summer, the new seasons of women’s baseball and Youth Double A will begin.
