Excellent news came from the Dominican Republic and it is that the warrior yuniesky maya was selected as the first choice of the re-entry draft of the Eastern Stars for the LIDOM grand final. The Pinar del Rio player played the season with the Águilas Cibaeñas with excellent results.
Maya pitched 10 games in the regular season, all as a starter, working 52 1/3 innings in which he allowed 12 earned and 41 hits, struck out 36 and walked 13. His PCL was a very good 2.41 and his WHIP of 1.03 had bright edges. Despite these excellent numbers, he had a negative balance of wins and losses of three and four.
Already in the Round Robin he was 0-1, with an earned run average of 2.95 in four starts as a starter. He pitched 18.1 innings, had 18 hits and six earned runs, three of them in their last opening, precisely against the Eastern Stars, with six strikeouts and six walks.
Let us also remember that Yuniesky Maya already wore the flannel of this cast and was one of the bastions of the title achieved by this group in the 2018-2019 campaign, the first of that group in more than 50 years. In that Final Series he won two games, working 10 innings with only one cleanup allowed.
With the return of Maya, Cuban presence in the upcoming Caribbean Series is guaranteed, since their rivals, the Cibao Giants, have among their ranks Henry Urrutia from Las Tunas and Elián Leyva from Mayabeque, recently selected as the best pitcher of the season in the ARCO League, where he was the leader in wins, earned run average, WHIP and opponents’ average.
Stars and Giants begin this Monday in San Pedro de Macorís the Final Series to the best of seven games in search of the league title and the pass to the Caribbean Series, of which they will be the host country.
