MLB News: Right-handed reliever who was once very effective with Marlins and Guardians agrees with Royals

The Kansas City Royals are signing reliever Nick Wittgren with a minor league contract. He will receive an invitation to spring training 2023 MLB. Wittgren has pitched at the MLB level in each of the past seven seasons.

The Purdue Product he spent three years each in Miami and Cleveland between 2016 and 2021, usually posting strong results while absorbing low-leverage entries. Wittgren posted an ERA of 3.14 or less in three of his first four seasons, displaying strong control and generally missing bats at a slightly above-average rate:

However, home runs became an increasing problem during his time in Cleveland, and the 6-foot-1 California veteran allowed nearly two long balls per nine innings en route to a 5.05 ERA in 2021.

The Guardians cut him from their 40-man roster at the end of the 2021 season. He spent most of the winter in free agency, but caught up with the Cardinals during spring training on a major league contract. That deal guaranteed him $1.2MM and a spot in the season-opening bullpen.
